Girard Perregaux

A brief history

Girard-Perregaux was founded in 1856 when Constantin Girard married Marie Perregaux.   Soon after, the company really made a name for itself when it unveiled at the Paris Universal Exhibition the masterpiece, “Tourbillon Sous Trois Ponts d’Or” (translation: Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges).   154 years later, Girard-Perregaux is still intact.   In 1993, Girard-Perregaux signed a co-branding arrangement with the celebrated Italian car manufacturer, Ferrari, which has yielded a remarkable line of sporty chronographs.

IWC

A brief History

Originally, IWC was an American company producing watches in Switzerland for the US market.   In 1868, the company moved to Schaffhausen, Germany.   IWC really made a name for itself in World War II by making intricate Pilot’s Watches.   In 1967 IWC introduced the Aquatimer and changed the diving watch market forever.   Worn in many movies by Jacques Cousteau, the aquatimer was the first watch to have a rotating bezel inside the watch, not on the outside of the case.   Currently, IWC is owned by the Swatch Group.

Ulysse Nardin

A brief history

Ulysse Nardin established his company in 1846.   30 years later, his son, Paul-David, took over and continued his fathers excellence.   Ulysse Nardin specialized in mechanical marine chronometers.   For the next 50 years, they won so many awards and certificates the company’s legacy was guaranteed.   The company was sold in 1983.   In 1996, the company celebrated it’s 150th anniversary with the release of the 1846 Chronometer.   Many other incredible watches soon came including the “Freak” and the “Sonata”.

Breguet

A brief history

In 1775, A.L. Breguet founded his company and soon became an official supplier to the French Royal family.   Breguet invented the first self-winding watch, first repeater, and the first turbillion.   He utilized moon phase perpetual calendars, and with the help of Napoleon, he invented the hinged “half-hunter”.   Through most of the 1900’s the company was sold a number of times.   In 1999, the Swatch Group purchased and acquired Breguet.

Franck Muller

A brief history

Unlike many other top tier manufacturers, Franck Muller is not a brand that started in the 1700’s.   Franck Muller was actually founded in 1992 and has risen fast to become one of the most recognizable watch lines in existence.   Out of watch school in the early 80’s, Franck Muller obtained a job repairing fine quality pocket watches for museums and private individuals.   It was during this period that Muller came in contact with some of the finest, complicated timepieces ever produced and was thus inspired to eventually produce his own masterpieces.   Franck Muller produces at least one world watch premiere every year.

Cartier

A brief history

The history of Cartier is fantastic, as it invented many styles of watches that are still produced today.   Founded in 1847 by Louis-Franois Cartier, this company was originally a jewelry boutique.   The first wrist watch made by Cartier was called the Santos Dumont named after the Brazilian Aviator in 1904.   2 years later, Cartier began experimenting with jewel – encrusted watches.    1917 saw the introduction of the famous Cartier Tank watch.   The Tank watch has long been regarded as the single most important and influential watch design of the 20th century.  The Tank watch distinctive timepiece was designed in tribute to the Allied Tank commanders who helped defend France during World War I.   Today Cartier watches are Swiss-made with French high style.

Audemars Piguet

A brief history

Audemars Piguet is definitely regarded as a top tier watch manufacturer. It is one of the oldest and most established Swiss watchmakers, the company was a partnership between Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet officially formed in 1889. They focused on only high-quality, complex ultra-precise watches. To this day, Audemars Piguet is the oldest watch manufacturer still owned by it’s founding family.

Patek Philippe & Co.

A brief history

Patek Philippe was established in 1851 between Antoine Patek and Jean A Philippe.   This duo created the foundation which allowed Patek Philippe to dominate the Swiss watch industry for over 150 years.   In 1863 they invented the “free mainspring” that lead to the invention of the automatic watch.   In 1889 they invent a special “Perpetual Calendar” which for the first time, keeps track of how many days in each month and knows when it’s leap year.   The split second chronograph is patented by Patek in 1902.   30 years later, the company is sold to the Stern family who stills owns them today.   To this day, Patek has not stopped creating incredible variations of watches.

Rolex

A brief history

Rolex is easily the most famous high-end watch line in the world.   It is also the most recognizable and arguably one of the most durable watches in existence.   The  Rolex company can be traced to 1905 when Hans Wilsdorf and W Davis established their watch company called Wilsdorf and Davis.   3 years later the name was changed to Rolex.   At this time, pocket watches were more popular than wristwatches but Rolex had a vision, and that vision was that one day wristwatches would far surpass pocket watches in popularity.   They were right.   Through the years Rolex is credited with building the first truly water proof watch called the “Oyster”.   The first watch with an automatic date called the “Datejust”.   And the first diving watch resistant to 100 meters called the “Submariner”.
