Demand For Vintage Watches On The Rise

The demand by Collectors, fashion minded, and bargain conscious customers for Vintage watches is on the Rise for a number of reasons.

The vintage watch industry is currently a very large industry and it is growing at a very fast pace based upon the realization that vintage watches are:

  • more affordable than new watches
  • are eco-friendly “Green” since they are considered recycled
  • becoming more popular and publicized based upon exposure via celebrities, the media, and television shows such as the Antique Roadshow
  • limited in supply and availability
  • unique and distinctive in design

History has shown that even in a down economy vintage watches continue to be in demand for collectors and new consumers, and since vintage watches provide more value for the money, vintage watch sales are actually currently growing at a rate that exceeds the rate of new watches.

The trend of vintage watch consumption is now an international phenomenon and with the internet, sales are growing at a very fast pace.  The more inventory and more diverse inventory of vintage watches a business has directly correlates to increased sales and profitability.

The demand for new watches has trended downward since the recession beginning in 2008, but the demand for pre-owned watches is actually trending upward due to the fact that pre-owned watches can be purchased at a fraction of the cost of a new watch and that there is a new awareness and demand for collecting vintage watches.  A recent July 7, 2011 New York Times front page of the Styles section article, titled “Tick, Tick, Tick, Chic”, addresses the trend of an increase in men in their 30’s “turning back” to wearing watches, especially vintage watches.

Attendance at recent watch shows, both those restricted to only watch dealers and those open to the general public, where pre-owned watches are sold, have had dramatic increases in attendance with the number of attendees exceeding historical numbers and breaking attendance records.  New markets, such as China and Korea, are gaining vast interest in pre-owned and vintage watches which is evident by representatives of these countries beginning to attend US and European watch shows.

New Watch Trends – Back To Classic Style

What was once considered Old is New again!   Watch manufacturers are producing new watches with styles that are reflective of the older vintage classic watch styles thereby retuning to more of a normal classic style and producing fewer big and bling style watches.  In fact, many watch manufacturers are reintroducing “retro” models that are either completely like there original vintage version or are very similar in appearance to their original vintage version.

In the watch industry, most of the watch manufacturers today are listening to their customers and these customers are expressing a renewed interest in the classic, traditional, and elegant styles.    These classic and vintage styles are also growing in demand.   And since these classic and vintage designs are ageless, there usage a value lasts and lasts.

In bad economic times people tend to return to the basics and fundamentals and these classic and vintage watch styles are safe investments that tend to maintain, and in the case of a vintage watch, even increase in value!   A classic vintage watch never loses value, so consider investing for the present and your future by purchasing a vintage watch for yourself or a friend or loved one.

A brief History
